series of storms to sweep through northern california is here. we have live team storm coverage. let's begin with our meteorologist lisa argen who is tracking the storm will live doppler 7 hd. >> good morning, everyone. your eye goes right to the red and this is where it is draped from the sacramento valley back to clear lake and windsor and santa rosa. the back edge has been pushing through ukiah and with it the very gusty winds preceding the gusts. we have wind gusts up to 51 miles an hour at the airport, 38 miles an hour winds from hayward. a little lighter but still at the higher elevations you are seeing 63 miles an hour wind gusts down to about 2,000 feet down in the south bay. here's the north bay. look at the heavy rain from richmond, martinez and berkeley, now pushing into the east bay. and 580 and back westward. 280 in san francisco. not only looking it he rain but gusty winds. lighter rains into fremont and union city and the south bay. this will all continue to increase throughout the day. the first half of the day looking much, much different than the second half. caroly

, also light. mainly--light. the satellite and radar showing northern california moisture this plume that continues to push that will continue to be responsible for the system tomorrow. there is a secondary system forming. the tail end of that will push for northern california. this will go towards sunday. as we look at futurecast spotty showers. hit or miss. not exactly where they will be but just keeping your umbrella and the would be a good idea and while that might be nice we could use that dry weather i do not think it is going to happen. it could continue. that will move in after midnight. heavy rainfall through 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. at the rainfall will stall over the north bay and concentrated. and pressing south of the golden gate. there is even a flawed watch in effect for the north bay, the san mateo, with a flood watch. because of thatfall totals near what we saw today with over 3 in. in the valleys. that is where the flood watch is in effect and the wind will be gusting. 60 m.p.h. the sierras, not much snowfall to is the highest elevations with about nine dozen feet. all

? that bears explaining. i'm going to do that now. northern california is going to get some rainfall. two things have changed. first, the atmosphere isn't as juicy. there's a certain water content that we can measure in the atmosphere and this particular system doesn't have as much as the past three that you endured over five days. so not as much juice in the atmosphere and notice everything is lifting to our north and west because that's where the focus of the jet stream energy is. it's been pushed a little to the north because of high pressure building in off the southern california coastline. so that near miss as opposed it a direct hit with less moisture means you're only going to get some rainfall so it will be slick and tough driving at times tomorrow but it won't be an all-day washout and won't be a concern like over the weekend. now, beyond tomorrow, it's all about high pressure and after a very cloudy pattern over the past several weeks we'll have high pressure building in and we'll have a dry chilly sunny northwest flow of air. we'll have highs only around 60 over the weekend wi

of moisture out there. it's aimed squarely at the bay area and northern california. the only reason why it's not pouring outside right now is we're in between wave of low pressure moving through. right now we're getting scattered showers. look at the rain up and down the western sea board here. seattle, portland getting heavy rainfall. our round of rain is several miles offshore. it's only a matter of time before it gets here. the timing has changed. it likely will be after midnight tomorrow night before the rain picks up in and around san francisco, oakland and san jose. we're pushing things back after midnight tomorrow. rainfall totals have not changed. everywhere you see purple another two inches of rainfall. north day, three to five inches of additional rainfall. a lot of rain coming through from midnight tomorrow night through the day on sunday. it looks like it will come in a consolidated amount of time. it looks like the rain will be out of here sunday afternoon. dryer by sunday evening. the average high is right around 60 degrees. napa 64. san jose, 65 degrees. the rain picks up to

. this is the first in a series of storms heading in the direction of northern california. good evening, everybody. let's head outside. foggy evening. the city by the bay where we've seen less than .05 of rainfall. let's check in on our radar. this system has. falling apart at the seams. still noting precipitation. heading towards the open bay waters. we also have light rain to moderate precipitation. it's wet in hayward at this hour. this is where the bulk of the activity is. broke in half, lifted up towards the greater lakota hoe area. we'll have that forecast for you. first thing is first, with a blanket of clouds, a scattered shower into the 40s. feels very raw outside. we will occasionally see right rain tomorrow. extended forecast calls for very active weather pattern. this is an area of low pressure. it hits the north bay and falls apart. this is future cast. you can plan your morning commute. from time to time you may need that umbrella. it will be short lived. more of a nuisance and wet roadways. we begin to clear out on wednesday only to set the stage for more rainfall by the weekend. up

is the circulation. this will set up a pattern that will direct the storms closer to northern california. so we're talking about multiple storms. the first one set to move in, friday. the second one on saturday. another one as we head into sunday. accumulation is pretty impressive. could be approaching 7 inches in the north bay total -- coatal hills. around 2 to 3 around the bay itself and even approaching 5 inches around the santa cruz mountains. i clicked the button too fast here. but just to give you the perspective with the numbers. those are the forecast titles through the weekend. our rain will translate to some more mountains. in fact, significant snow. you can expect for delays and possibly clod closures -- road closures, as we head into friday, saturday and also into sunday. here is our forecast model showing you the chances of rain developing in the north bay between 3:00 and 0:00, slowly spreading to the south by 11:00 tonight. the south bay is still dry. a good portion of the bay area, that rainfall is still a factor. tomorrow morning we'll have wet roadways. the south bay is not pi

on the increase in the northern parts of california. and for us we are going to have to wait a little while for the storm system. we'll see increasing clouds clout the day, patchy fog at the coast. storm clouds this evening and later tonight, rain becoming more likely around 11:00 or so and looks like around the bay area for tomorrow morning's commute. looks like back to wet weather in the bay area but not for the better part of the day, should stay dry. 64 dry in san jose. 57 cool in pacifica. 60 hayward. east bay temperatures up in the 50s and 60s this afternoon. and inside the bay you will see those temperatures in the 50s and 60s. clouds on the increase and rain developing into the evening hours in the north bay and across the rest of the bay area overnight tonight into tomorrow. showers going to be cold showers tomorrow morning and then that will break off dry weather on thursday, maybe some more showers on friday. then just about every other day now looks like a storm approaches the bay area. none of these is very big but cold, elizabeth. >> this is two weeks in a row that we have had

for that part of the region and some more snow expected, a good portion of northern california if you are taking interstate 5 up through shasta, be extra careful. there is a chance we could have some freeway closures. look at this winter storm warning out towards the sierra. snowfall 2 to 5 feet. that's a lot of snow and that could cause some problems on the roadway as we head into friday, saturday and sunday. here's our forecast model for today. we're starting out dry an increase in the high clouds. we do bring in a chance for rain showers up in the north bay. you will notice the south bay's still dry but then into early friday morning we're tracking rain clouds. we'll have wet pavement to start out our can friday morning commute. for today, increasing clouds, the chance of a shower up in the north bay, especially toward the latter portion of the afternoon. a pretty active forecast, some rain and wind, tapering off into the afternoon. a second storm producing heavier rain. saturday morning and possibly a third one into sunday as well. have to keep an eye on the rivers and the streams out there

section of the northern california coast. kron 4's charles clifford has details >>reporter: earlier today in washington the president gave a green light to the national oceanic and atmospheric adminstration, or noaa, to come up with a plan for expanding two of northern california's marine sanctuaries. let's take a look at a google earth map. this is a view of san francisco looking north across the city. to the west, off the marin coast is the gulf of the farallones national marine sanctuary seen herer in green. it covers more than 1200 square miles of ocean and includes the farallon islands and the waters around point rays. to the north is the cordell bank national marine sanctuary which includes more than 500 square nautical miles. now, under the proposed expansion the cordell sanctuary would be more than doubled in size, as would the farallones sanctuary which would be extended north to point arena in mendocino county. if approved the expanded sanctuaries would include more than 50 miles of coastline and protect more than 4500 square miles of ocean. northern california representative ly

british columbia. for us, sunny and breezy today will do it. over the rest of northern california, if you're heading out, dense fog advisories posted until 9:00 this morning from the southern end of the sacramento valley, right down through the san joaquin valley. 65 degrees in monterey, 67 and sunny. out of the bay area, mostly sunny skies at the airport, winds out of the northwest to about 30. new york's got rain. but for the rest, just clouds in denver and chicago. chicago, just 34. los angeles at 73. back in the bay area, the numbers today look nice. mid-60s will do it. 63 at pacifica, 64 for san jose. 66 in santa rosa. how about the extended forecast? next chance for rain for the bay area coming in wednesday. not a big rain maker. showers could linger into thursday. latter half of the weekend, you have to stay tuned, because right now some of the models are saying we'll get more rain on thursday, friday and saturday. some say we're not. so we're going to broad brush it and say partly cloudy skies. we will get wet on wednesday. we will have more details in the next 30 minutes. in the
